Housing is currently responsible for 25% of CO2 emissions and has an important role in helping to achieve Government targets of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (which include CO2).  Under the Kyoto protocol, this means a reduction of 12.5% below 1990 figures by 2012.  However, the Government has set a higher target of 20%.

Carbon savings can easily be achieved through refurbishing homes with energy-efficiency measures, design for passive gains (eg from sunshine), the use of renewable energy to power hot-water systems, and reductions in the energy used by electrical appliances and in the production of materials used in refurbishing homes.

By carrying out energy refurbishment in accordance with current Scheme Development Standards, several tonnes of CO2 could be saved each year in a semi-detached house.

The energy models provide detailed information on carbon savings for each house type in Green Street.
